POST:
Wait—did a web designer just ask that? Yep. And I stand by it.
Sure, web design is important. It’s the digital equivalent of dressing to impress. A well-designed site says, “I’ve got it together,” while a chaotic one whispers, “Run, don’t click.” But if you’re thinking the look of your site is what’s going to win clients, book sales, or make the donation button light up like a Christmas tree—you might want to sit down.
Because what’s actually more important than your design is this:
👉 A relatable message that speaks directly to your audience’s needs, questions, and hang-ups.
Yep. Words > pretty.
Pretty Can’t Fix Confusion
Imagine this: you land on a gorgeous site. Everything moves and glides and sparkles like a Pixar short. But… you have no idea what they do. Or how to contact them. Or why you should care. You click away, mildly dazzled, completely unconverted.
Now flip it. Say you land on a site that maybe isn’t winning design awards anytime soon—but it gets you. It talks like a human. It knows what you’re looking for. It answers your questions before you even ask them. You feel seen, heard, and dare I say—ready to take action.
That’s the power of message-first design. It’s like giving your website a soul before you dress it up.
Your Audience Isn’t Looking for “Sleek.” They’re Looking for Solutions.
Your visitors come with invisible thought bubbles:
- “Can this person help me?”
- “Is this worth the price?”
- “Do they understand my situation?”
- “Will this be a pain to figure out?”
If your website answers those questions in a way that sounds like a friendly, knowledgeable human instead of a robot in a blazer, you’re golden. Design enhances that message—but it can’t replace it.
Websites Don’t Convert Because They’re Pretty. They Convert Because They Make People Feel Understood.
So if you’re stuck trying to pick fonts or deciding whether your button should be blue or slightly-bluer, pause. Take a step back and ask:
“Does my site clearly say what I do, who I do it for, and why it matters?”
If not, no worries — but let’s fix that first. (Then we can obsess over the perfect shade of button-blue together.)
TL;DR – Message First, Makeup Later
(P.S. TL;DR = “Too Long; Didn’t Read.” We’re not here to assume you speak fluent internet acronyms. This makes my point of being sure you speak the language of your audience 😊 Even the clearest message can miss the mark if it assumes too much about the audience.)
Design turns heads. But your message wins hearts (and clients).
So what’s more important than web design on a website?
A message that resonates, builds trust, and helps your visitor say, “Ah—finally. This is what I’ve been looking for.”
Then we design around that.
