Gratitude for the Ordinary

POST:

As Thanksgiving approaches, or even as we are doing our daily gratitude, most of us pause to be grateful for the big things, the things that stand out — family, friends, home, work, health. And that’s good. Those things deserve our thanks.

But sometimes, in focusing on the obvious blessings, we overlook the quiet, everyday gifts that truly make life rich.

The ability to breathe — without effort, without thought.
To digest food and be nourished.
To hear birds in the morning… or to rest in the silence when they’re gone.
To see a sunrise or sunset.
To smell the familiar scent of someone we love.
To feel rain on our skin, sunshine on our face, or the softness of a blanket at night.

These small, essential things are the backdrop of every good moment — and they’re so constant that we often stop seeing them.

Even life’s challenges can hold something to be grateful for, if we choose to look closely enough. The crabby client means you have a client. The pile of bills means you have a home, utilities, and a life to support. The long to-do list means there are people who trust you to get things done.

Gratitude doesn’t have to wait for something extraordinary. It can live in the quiet moments, the imperfect days, and even the frustrations that remind us we’re alive and moving forward.

This Thanksgiving (and in my gratitude reflections), I’m reminding myself to look not just in the obvious blessings, but in the simple, unseen miracles that fill every ordinary day.

Happy Thanks Giving, every day.
